Social Entrepreneur – Developing a Social Change

By Steve Monas - Last updated: Friday, August 6, 2010

A Social Entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a Social Problem (a condition that at least some people in a community view as being undesirable) and used entrepreneurial principles to organize, create and manage a venture to make Social Change (The structural transformation of political, social, and economic systems and institutions “to create a more equitable and just society”.

What is a social change? From Fund For Southern Communities.

Progressive social change is a profoundly democratic undertaking.  At its best, people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, abilities and ages join together in developing and implementing creative solutions to social problems.  Organizing amplifies the voices of those whose interests are too often overlooked.

What I like is what Greg Bier said in Social Entrepreneurship, who really cares

We may take an existing product, but produce it with less scrape, fewer inputs, or with recycled components.  Mathematically, this increases productivity…doing more with less.

We could create a new service or product that meets a social need that isn’t being provided.  We could create jobs for the disadvantaged or disabled, pay employees a living wage and simply treat all employees with dignity.

One of the most significant impacts that entrepreneurs have is creating jobs.  That, in and of itself, is a social goal that contributes positively to society.

This really puts things in perspective as I am constantly publishing stories on Shoestring Venture from Social Entrepreneurs making a difference. There is so much good going on, whether its paying a wage, hiring victims from sex trafficking or helping a village in Uganda.

We as humanity, are taking the steps to make a difference. My purpose, at this time, besides helping entrepreneurs, is to get their stories out.

Tsunami Hawaii warning day from Chile earthquake

Tsunami Kauai Day

Tsunami Kauai Day

The phone call recording came in at 6:00 am, followed by the Tsunami sirens. That really didn’t get me up, but when my neighbor came over, thats when I knew it was for real.

We had started loading up my Ford with essentials. The radio and TV stated that we had to evacuate by 9 am. I had reparked my Taxi and other van on higher ground. Thats it. We all got together and found this spot above, where we ordered pizza, had wine and beer, and waited out the warnings. Nothing happened and we went home.
